How icebergs are named

The US National Ice Center names an iceberg from the Antarctic quadrant where it was first seen: A (0 to 90 degrees west), B (90 west to 180), C (180 to 90 east) or D (90 east to 0). A running number follows, as in A23. When a big iceberg breaks apart, each fragment keeps the name and gains a letter, so A23 gave A23A.
