How it works

Three steps from curiosity to a certificate. The ice is real. The adoption is symbolic, and we say so on every page.

  1. Pick a piece

Search the registry of 274,531 glaciers and the Antarctic icebergs on this week's official list. Each one is a real entry in a scientific inventory, with its coordinates and size.

  2. Make it yours

Give it a nickname and choose the name that goes on your certificate. You can hide your name from public pages at any time.

  3. Keep its story

Download a certificate with a unique ID and a QR code that anyone can check, and follow your piece from space as new satellite pictures arrive.

What is real and what is symbolic

Real: the glacier or iceberg, its position and size, and the satellite pictures. They come from public scientific sources, and each picture carries its date and source.

Symbolic: the adoption itself. Your name is linked, in our registry, to one piece of ice. You do not own it and the adoption gives no legal rights over it. It is a named, documented connection, not a title deed and not a donation.

The farewell

Icebergs do not last. Every week the US National Ice Center publishes a list of the Antarctic icebergs it tracks. When one stays off the list for eight weeks, we say goodbye: the page becomes a memorial, each adopter receives a certificate of passing, and the story stays online.

Glaciers change more slowly, but they change too. We show what the data says and never pretend a piece is something it is not.
