Adoptice stands on public data and open tools. Here is who made them and how we use them.

Glacier data

Glacier data: RGI 7.0 Consortium (2023). Randolph Glacier Inventory, A Dataset of Global Glacier Outlines, Version 7.0. Boulder, Colorado, USA: NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center. doi:10.5067/F6JMOVY5NAVZ. Licence: CC BY 4.0.

The Randolph Glacier Inventory supplies the glacier identifiers, outlines, areas, elevations and regions. We changed nothing in the scientific values. We add display names, slugs and pictures on top.

Iceberg data

Iceberg names, positions and sizes come from the weekly iceberg list of the US National Ice Center (USNIC). USNIC is a US government product and its data are public. Adoptice is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by USNIC.

Satellite pictures

  • Copernicus Sentinel. Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data [year], where [year] is the year of each picture, shown with the picture. Processed by Adoptice. Sentinel-2 images are used where they cover the glacier. The European Union and the data providers give no warranty for these data.
  • NASA GIBS. We acknowledge the use of imagery from NASA Worldview and the Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS), part of NASA's Earth Science Data and Information System (ESDIS). Used for polar regions and iceberg views. NASA does not endorse Adoptice.
  • Landsat, USGS. Public domain imagery, used for some sample pictures.

Ocean temperature

Sea surface temperature context comes from NOAA OISST (Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature), a public NOAA product.

Maps

Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, served by OpenFreeMap. The OpenStreetMap data are available under the Open Database Licence.

Place names

Nearest-place names use GeoNames, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0. See geonames.org.

The nearest city of each glacier in the research portal and its exports comes from the GeoNames cities15000 file (geonames.org, CC BY 4.0). The country of each glacier comes from Natural Earth 1:10m admin-0 countries (naturalearthdata.com, public domain); borders are shown as Natural Earth draws them and are not a position on any dispute.

Icons

Rank and leaderboard icons by Skoll, Lorc, Delapouite and Cathelineau from game-icons.net, licensed under CC BY 3.0 (creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0), recoloured by Adoptice.
