Questions and answers
The short version: the ice is real, the adoption is symbolic, and you can have your money back within 14 days.
Basics
What exactly am I adopting?
A symbolic adoption: your name is linked, in our registry, to one real glacier from the Randolph Glacier Inventory or one Antarctic iceberg tracked by the US National Ice Center. You receive a certificate with its real coordinates and a page that shows it from space. You do not own the ice and the adoption gives no legal rights over it.
Are the glaciers and icebergs real?
Yes. Every piece is an entry in a scientific list. Positions, areas and elevations come from those lists, and the pictures are real satellite images with their date and source.
Is Adoptice connected to NASA, ESA or the US National Ice Center?
No. We use their public data and credit it. We are an independent registry.
How many glaciers and icebergs can I choose from?
274,531 glaciers and the 33 icebergs on the current official list. A glacier has one adopter at a time. An iceberg has two parent places and any number of guardians.
Adoption and certificates
What do I get with a verified adoption?
A certificate (PDF and image) with a unique ID and a QR code anyone can check, a crew card, the farewell pack when the day comes, a named page in My ice, and, if you wish, your first name on the piece's page.
What does Follow include?
A named page for one glacier and one iceberg, a card you can share, alerts when something big happens and, if you choose, a monthly digest. It has no certificate.
What is the difference between a parent and a guardian?
Parents are two per iceberg and exclusive. Guardians are shared by anyone. Both receive a certificate with a unique ID. Parents appear first on the page.
Can I add a nickname or hide my name?
Yes. You can give your piece a nickname, which appears on the certificate, and you can hide your first name from public pages at any time.
How do I check that a certificate is genuine?
Enter its ID at adoptice.com/verify or scan the QR code. You will see whether it is valid, which piece it is for and the adopter's first name only.
Data and pictures
Where do the pictures come from?
From Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites where they cover the area, and from NASA satellites for the polar regions. We choose a clear recent image, crop it and never edit its colours.
Why does my piece have no recent picture?
Clouds, polar night and satellite schedules sometimes leave no clear image. The page then shows the latest clear one with its date, and updates when a new one exists.
What happens when an iceberg breaks up or melts?
We call it the farewell. When an iceberg stays off the official list for eight weeks we say goodbye, issue a certificate of passing to each adopter and keep a memorial page.
Payments and refunds
What does it cost?
A verified glacier is $12.99, an iceberg guardian $7.99, an iceberg parent from $29.99. Everything is on the pricing page. The price includes any tax.
What is your refund policy?
14 days, no questions asked. Write to us or use the contact form.
Is paying safe, and who is the seller?
Payments are handled by Lemon Squeezy, our payment partner and the official seller. We never see your card details.
Gifts and transfers
How do gifts work?
Choose a piece, add the recipient's name and email, write a message and pick a day. On that day they receive an email with a link to claim it, with no account needed first. You get a printable gift card at once.
Can I hand my adoption to someone else?
Yes, for a small fee ($2.99) or free once a year with the Crew Pass. The new person receives their own certificate and the old one is marked as replaced.
Crew Pass
What is the Crew Pass?
A subscription that sends you a postcard whenever one of your pieces has news, unlocks the printables for all your pieces and includes one free transfer a year.
How do I cancel?
From Crew Pass in your account, which opens the secure billing page. You keep the benefits until the end of the period you paid for.
Account and privacy
How do I sign in, and how do I delete my account?
There is no password: we email you a link that works once. On the Privacy page of your account you can download your data or ask us to delete your account. Certificates stay verifiable, but your name is replaced by "a former member".
