The farewell wall
Icebergs do not last. When one has stayed off the weekly list for eight weeks, we say goodbye and keep its record here.
Every week the US National Ice Center lists the Antarctic icebergs it tracks. Sooner or later each name stops appearing. Its page then becomes a memorial that keeps its last picture, the path it drifted and, where they allow it, the first names of the people who adopted it.
The list does not say why an iceberg leaves it. It may have broken up, melted or become too small to track, and we do not guess. The newest farewells come first.
