About Adoptice
An independent registry that lets anyone keep a named connection to one real piece of ice.
Adoptice in one paragraph
Adoptice is an independent online registry at adoptice.com where anyone can symbolically adopt a real glacier from the Randolph Glacier Inventory 7.0 or an Antarctic iceberg tracked weekly by the US National Ice Center. Each piece of ice has a public page with its data and real satellite pictures, and each adoption comes with a certificate that anyone can verify. The name is one word, made of adopt and ice: Adoptice.
Why we made it
There are 274,531 glaciers on Earth in the Randolph Glacier Inventory, and almost none of them has a name anyone remembers. Every week, the US National Ice Center lists the large icebergs drifting around Antarctica, and most people have never heard of them.
We thought a person could care about one of them, if it were easy to find, if it had a real picture and if its story were kept somewhere. So we built a registry where you can pick a glacier or an iceberg, give it a name and follow it from space.
What symbolic means, and why it is honest
You do not buy ice. The adoption links your name to a real entry in a scientific list and gives you a certificate with a unique ID that anyone can verify. It carries no legal rights over the ice, it is not a donation and it is not an investment. We say this on every page because trust matters more than a bigger promise.
What is real
- Glacier outlines, areas and elevations come from the Randolph Glacier Inventory 7.0.
- Iceberg names, sizes and positions come from the US National Ice Center weekly list.
- Pictures are real satellite images with their date and source.
